Oreo Phases of the Moon
3rd grade students carving the phases of the moon using a plastic utensil.
Instructions
Materials:
-round plastic or paper plates
-8 or more Oreo cookies
-plastic knife, popsicle stick, any other safe carving material
-phases of the moon sheet
Steps:
-Fill out the phases of the moon sheet with your students.
-Go over the correct phases of the moon using this smart notebook file.
-Next, introduce the Oreo Phases of the Moon project using the same smart notebook file.
-Twist open the Oreos and remove the cream using the plastic utensils for each phase.
-Place each cookie on the plate in order and write the name of each phase beside the cookie.
-Connect each phase using an arrow to show the way they flow.
-To close, go over the phases once again and enjoy the cookies!
Students were assessed according to how well they worked with their peers using this teamwork rubric.

a. Illustrate and describe how the Moon appears to move slowly across the sky from east to west during the day and/or night
b. Describe the pattern of change that can be observed in the Moon’s appearance relative to time of day and month as it occurs over several months
